LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's soccer program got a sendoff of epic proportions from senior Mireya Gonzalez, scoring three of the team's four goals in a shutout win over MUW.
The Lady Braves (1-9, 0-8 SWAC) launched 27 shots, 13 on-target for a shot-on-goal percentage of .481 plus lined up for five corners.
Gonzalez recorded her second career hat trick in her final home game in an Alcorn uniform, scoring thrice while moving up to third on the all-time goals list (12) and fourth for points (28).
The political science major from Los Angeles, California converted three of her five on-target shots go in over six attempts for a 0.833 SOG percentage.
Mikayla Shaughnessy spent the first 88 minutes and 40 seconds in goal, holding the Mississippi University for Women scoreless with five saves before Vivian Lugo came on for the final 1:20.
Her first goal came courtesy of an Owls mistake, putting one of the best scorers in school history in the box for a penalty shot in which she delivered in the 45th minute.
The second goal was in the 68th, pushing one past Sarah Gilliland with an assist from Emily Serrato.
Her third and final goal was aided by a perfectly placed corner kick by Rosalina Santoro in front of the right post which Gonzalez gently misdirected into the net during the 81st minute.
The first goal of the night was the perfect case of right place, right time. Paula Cabeza rocketed a ball from outside the square that clanged off the crossbar but perfectly placed towards the waiting leg of Kiarra Colson who capitalized for the go-ahead goal at 18:28.
Colson was constantly in the attacking zone, posting eight shots and five shots-on-goal which were both season-highs.
Cabeza (2) and Serrato (1) had the rest of the team's shots-on-goal while Tylesha Boykin came close to scoring three times but settled for her first three shots of her career.
MUW (2-11) got five shots on target over 15 overall, with two coming from Sarah Havens and one apiece from Leah Crabtree, Nevin Holley and Lizzie Truelock.
Head coach Kevin Larry and the Soccer Braves will now wait to see who it faces in the SWAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday, April 8 in Prairie View, Texas.
