Lady Braves Close To Breaking Through Despite Loss

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's soccer program had two opportunities to tie the game in the final seven minutes of regulation but both sailed high as Texas Southern escaped with a 1-0 win.

The Lady Braves (0-4, 0-4 SWAC) contributed four shots on goal and 13 shots in total while the defense held the Lady Tigers scoreless through the 73:50 mark.

Paula Cabeza was the recipient of the first big goal opportunity in the 83rd minute, surrounded by TSU defenders in the attacking zone she launched one that went through the football uprights. She topped the Purple and Gold with two shots-on-goal on three shot attempts.

Mireya Gonzalez registered the most shots by an Alcorn player with four on the day but failed to put one on target including one last ditch effort with ten seconds left that just missed the top-right crossbar.

Goalie Vivian Lugo had a nearly flawless performance sans the one score, making eight saves in a complete game effort while playing excellent defense in the box as well.

Defender Niamh Magill contributed her first shot and shot-on-goal as a Lady Brave.

Rosalina Santoro was the final lady in Purple and Gold to register a shot-on-goal, putting one on target on two attempts.

Kiarra Colson, Navani Davis and Habana Guerra were the other three Lady Braves to get off shots, tallying one each.

TSU's Mia Ontiveros spoiled the shutout, beating the keeper in the 74th minute with an assist by Stephanie Robles to provide the only score of the afternoon.

Texas Southern remains undefeated (18-0) against Alcorn but the Lady Braves came within inches of snapping that streak today.

Coach Kevin Larry and the Soccer Lady Braves now embark on a four-game SWAC road trip over the next two weeks, starting at Grambling State on Friday at 3 p.m.
