LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University volleyball program is showcasing one of the greatest players in school history as senior Fiapaipai Iosia moved to second on the all-time service aces leaderboard in Friday's match with Southern.
The Lady Braves (1-5, 1-5 SWAC) have been lucky to have Iosia over the last four seasons as she is already the program record holder for digs (1,229 and counting), which is nearly 200 more than the second place on the list and the gap will continue to grow.
The Long Beach, California native led the squad with three aces against the Lady Jaguars, moving her into a tie for second place with Tamekia Bean who registered 138 as well from 1997-2000. She trails only Andrea' Horska (2000-2002) as she recorded 152 during her three year tenure in Lorman.
Mae Lewis had the best offensive night of her Lady Brave career, racking up personal-bests for points (16.5) and kills (16) while hitting .250 with a block and a dig.
Mariah Wilmoth once again topped the Purple and Gold in digs at 17 to go along with a season-high five assists plus smacking a service ace.
Tiara Adams had her best night under Coach Robinson's tutelage, clubbing nine kills with just one error on 13 attempts for a hitting percentage of .615. The Wharton County Junior College transfer led the team with a season-best three blocks and logged season-highs for points (10.5) and kills (9) as well.
Jasmine Chambers contributed her third consecutive double-double, registering 16 assists and 12 digs on top of adding her ninth kill of the campaign to her ledger.
Southern Lady Jaguars | L, 1-3 (26-24, 22-25, 20-25, 25-27)
The first set started off evenly matched with both the Lady Jags and Lady Braves notching eight points apiece in the first 16. The home team went on a huge run of eight unanswered to take control of the set at 16-8. Southern was determined not to roll over, storming all the way back to within two at 17-15, Alcorn. The Purple and Gold were on the doorstep of victory at 23-20 when SU struck again, going ahead 24-23. The ladies from Lorman got the final laugh, earning the last three points with an exclamation point added to the end with a kill from Lewis to win the set, 26-24.
Southern came out hot in the second set, taking five of the first seven points. Alcorn would climb back into the lead at the 28-point mark at 15-13. Another lead change would soon follow with SU winning six-of-eight after that to take back the edge at 19-17. The Lady Braves would knot things at 22 but never lead again, dropping to even in the sets, 22-25 Southern.
The third set seemed to be going well for the Lady Braves, ahead most of the way en route to a 12-9 advantage. The Lady Jags managed to tie the set at 17 but Alcorn's goals were still very much in reach. Six straight points and eight-of-ten later, SU had won the set and Coach Robinson's club was staring at elimination down two-to-one, 19-25.
Set number four was very back-and-forth as at one time both squads alternated points for nine serves in-a-row. The Lady Jags seemed to have a grasp on things, playing from ahead the majority of the first 36 points before Alcorn squared things away at 18. SU was at match point for three straight attempts when they led 24-21 but the Lady Braves continued to fight and tied the proceedings at 24. Three more points by Southern, with a Mae Lewis kill thrown in ended the contest as Southern moved to 4-4 in conference play, 25-27.
The Purple and Gold are scheduled to play Jackson State inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Sunday, March 14 with a 4 p.m. serve time.
