BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It was announced Tuesday afternoon that
Briana Johnson is the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Defensive Player of the Week for the period of October 25-31, with the announcement coming from the league headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama.
Â
Johnson, a 5-foot-5 redshirt freshman from Inglewood, California, was instrumental in helping Alcorn keep two clean sheets over the weekend courtesy a goalless draw away to Alabama State, as well as a 1-0 win away to Alabama A&M.
Â
She won all her one-on-one duels over the weekend, as well as never being dribbled past in 180 minutes of playing time on the pitch.
Â
Currently, Alcorn is riding a school-record five-match unbeaten streak, breaking the earlier record of four games unbeaten (three wins ad a draw) set in 2011.
Â
The Braves have qualified for the SWAC Championships for the first time since the COVID rearranged 2020-21 season.
Â
Alcorn concludes the regular season Friday, Oct. 28, when the Braves travel to in-state opponent Mississippi Valley State in Itta Bena at 2 p.m.
Â
Other SWAC weekly awards announced were Jackson State's Kendyl Terrell (Offensive Player of the Week) and Mississippi Valley's McKenzie McCarthy (Goalkeeper of the Week).
