Baseball Has Shaky Season Opener at McNeese State

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Sophomore first baseman Jamaal Green had two hits on the day, but the Braves could not get the offense going to fall 13-0 at McNeese State Friday afternoon. With the loss, Alcorn opens the season 0-1.

Graduate pitcher Andrew Meadows started the competition for the loss, pitching 1.0 innings for four hits against, nine earned runs, four walks, and one strikeout.

Austin Guzman and Jamil Betancourt also saw action on the mound against the Cowboys. Guzman pitched 2.0 innings for three hits against, four earned runs, three walks, and two strikeouts, and Betancourt occupied the mound for 3.0 innings with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Braves (0-1) recorded two hits inside the Joe Miller Ballpark. Green led the team at the plate with three at-bats and two hits.

McNeese (3-2) connected for seven hits and 13 runs. Julian Gonzales led the Cowboys with a 2-for-2 appearance for three runs and three ribbies. Pitching four of the seven innings, Chance Stone earned the win. He recorded two hits against, two walks, and four strikeouts. With six strikeouts, Sean-Michael Brady pitched the remaining three innings to grab the save.

The Braves will continue the four-game series versus McNeese on Saturday, Feb. 26. The second-day doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
