PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Alcorn State women's basketball team retires an extended losing streak, defeating Prairie View A&M 61-52 on Saturday, Feb. 26. The Braves improve to 3-18 overall and 2-10 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Inside the William Nicks Building, two players for Alcorn hit double-digit scoring. Cayla Obillo led the Braves off the bench with 11 points, and Tyginae Wright scored 10. Obillo also led the team in rebounding, bringing down seven boards.
Alcorn overcame unreliable shooting to outlast the Panthers. Shooting just 30.8 percent from the field, the Braves hit 12 of 39 attempts, including five of 19 in three-point range. More than half of Alcorn's points were scored at the line. The Braves hit 32 free throws on 44 attempts (72.7 percent) for the win.
PVAM (11-15, 8-7 SWAC) did not fare any better in the shooting. The Panthers made 20 shots on 70 attempts from the floor, with only two of 25 (8 percent) from beyond the arc. Prairie View took 18 shots from the line to hit 10 (55.6 percent). Diana Rosenthal led the offense with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Panthers started the game quickly, scoring the game's first four points and building an early 10-5 lead. Alcorn answered with a 9-2 run, started by a three-pointer from Obillo, taking the lead 14-12 at the beginning of the second quarter.
A battle for dominance began with the lead exchanging three times and tying three times. By the close of the period, the Braves would win the half, going into the break with a 22-19 advantage on a three-pointer by T'Naye Griffin.
In the third quarter, Alcorn created some space by going on an 11-2 run, punctuated by two three-pointers from Wright. The Panthers only scored three more points in the period, and the Braves enter the fourth quarter with a 39-23 lead.
Closing in on the 16-point deficit, PVAM opened the final period to score the first seven points. It was not enough to close the gap, and Alcorn State took the contest, 61-52.
The Braves head to Texas Southern on Monday for the final road game of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the Health and Physical Education Arena.
