Box Score HOUSTON, Texas – The Alcorn State women's basketball team concluded regular-season road play at Texas Southern on Monday, falling 62-55 to the Tigers inside the H&PE Arena.
Three Braves carried the offense to score in the double-figures during the effort. Tyginae Wright and Maya Claytor had 12 points each, and Kailyn Watkins added 11. Wright also led Alcorn with eight rebounds, and LaRae Rascoe led the team with three assists.
As a squad, the Braves (3-20, 2-14 Southwestern Athletic Conference) hit 21 of their 58 (36.2 percent), including five of 22 (22.7 percent) from beyond the arc. Alcorn then added eight points on 12 (66.7 percent) attempts at the line.
Texas Southern (11-13, 11-6 SWAC) landed 21 of 49 (42.9 percent) from the floor, with 6 of 16 (37.5 percent) in three-point range. At the free-throw line, the Tigers made 14 of their 19 (73.7 percent) shots.
Ataiya Bridges scored 18 points for TSU, and Andriana Avent had 16. Jada Perry led the team in rebounds to bring down a game-high of nine.
Texas Southern opened the game with a 5-0 lead, hitting a three-pointer just seconds after tipoff. Watkins scored the first points for the Braves on a layup to cut the Tigers lead to 5-2.
Texas Southern maintained the lead for the remainder of the game despite a four-quarter rally by Alcorn. Starting the period behind 56-35, The Braves went on a 20-6 run to end the game. It was not enough, and the Tiger took the 62-55 victory.
The Alcorn State women's basketball team will be back in action on Thursday, March 3, hosting in-state rival Mississippi Valley State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
