JACKSON, Miss. – The Alcorn State baseball team suffered a 13-0 shutout versus in-state rival Jackson State University in game one of the three-game series. With the loss on Saturday, the Braves fall to 0-5 on the season while the Tigers improve to 6-5.
Andrew Meadows (0-2) took his second loss of the season on the mound. The Atlanta, Ga. native started the contest, pitching 4.1 innings for four hits against, seven runs (three earned), four walks, and two strikeouts. Jamil Betancourt entered the game in the fifth inning. He pitched 3.0 innings for five hits against, five earned runs, five walks, and two strikeouts. Brandon Dun came in to close, pitching 0.2 innings for one hit against, one earned run, and two walks.
Against the Tigers, the Braves connected for five hits but had three errors. Jamaal Green led the team at the plate with a 3-for-4 appearance that included one double. Khalil Smith also had a double, and Diego Lopez-Molina hit for one single.
Pitching the complete nine-inning game, Juan Marulanda (3-0) took the win on the mound for the Tigers. He faced 35 batters for five hits against, one walk, and 11 strikeouts.
Jackson State's 13 runs came with 10 hits and one error. Jatavis Melton had a 2-for-4 appearance with one triple and three runs. Ty Hill had a 2-for-3 appearance with one double and one run, and Jaelen Williams had one home run for three RBIs.
The Alcorn State baseball team return to action on Saturday, March 5, taking on the Tigers in doubleheader action to close out the season. The first pitch is at 1 p.m.
