Tennis Splits Regular Season Closer Versus Mississippi College

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State men's and women's tennis teams closed the 2022 regular season on Thursday, April 14, in dual matches against Mississippi College. The Braves split the day as the men's team defeated the Choctaws 4-3, and the women's team fell 6-1.

With the victory Thursday afternoon, the Alcorn men's tennis team improves to 5-12. The Braves started the contest with a 1-0 deficit, picking up only one set during the doubles competitions. Alcorn pair Luka Rodic and Luka Andonov delivered Mississippi College's only loss in doubles, defeating Joe Jarvis and Danny Liu 6-4.

The Braves took four of six singles contests to win the match. David Pata defeated Brady McDaniel 6-3, 6-2 on court one. Lucas Dini took down Jarvis 6-3 and 6-2 on court two, while Isaac Santitto outlasted Greyson Black 6-2 and 6-2 on court four. Andonov had an extended battle on court three, taking the contest to three sets to conquer Carlos Trujillo 6-2, 4-5, and 6-2.

After facing the Choctaws, the Lady Braves complete the regular season with a 6-16 record. Doubles pair Kimberley Kaome and Andrea Quiroz defeated Anna Valiaeva and Paulina Cota 6-2, but it was not enough to grab the doubles point for Alcorn.

Aiza Zholdakayeva recorded Alcorn's only point outlasting Fernanda Cota 6-4 and 6-2 on court five in the singles contest.

Quiroz also played well in the singles contest. She took Valiaeva to three sets but lost 6-3, 2-6, and 8-10.

Along with the two matches, Head Coach Darnesha Moore and the Braves tennis teams recognized five seniors who played in their final home match at Alcorn. Kareem Bowe, Santiago Rocca, David Pata, Stefany Grlj, and Kimberley Kaome were honored for their contributions to the Braves tennis programs.
