LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State baseball team will remain home this weekend as it hosts Southern University in its fourth Southwestern Athletic Conference series of the 2022 season. The Braves look to bounce back after a rough start and finish the season's remaining games on a high note. ASU enters the matchup 1-19 and 1-8 in conference play, while the defending Southern is 9-19 and 6-3 in the league.
The Braves last faced the Jaguars during the 2021 SWAC Championship tournament. Alcorn fell 10-5 in the elimination game to the eventual champions. The two teams have met 100 times, and Southern leads the series 70-28-2.
Jamil Betancourt leads the Braves at the plate with a .327 batting average. He is the only player batting over .300 for Alcorn with 49 at-bats, three runs, and 16 hits. Deigo Lopez-Molina and Khalil Smith leads the team in RBIs with 10 each.
Jermel Ford (0-5) heads the Braves bullpen with a 9.72 earned run average. He threw 25.0 innings for 41 runs (27 earned), 25 walks, and 24 strikeouts. Austin Guzman has grabbed Alcorn's only pitching victory with a 1-5 record.
JJ Rollons leads Southern's offense with a .326 batting average. He has recorded 92 at-bats with 21 runs, 30 hits, and 15 RBIs. Enrique Ozoa leads the pitching staff with a 2.76 ERA.
The first game is set for Friday, April 8, at 6 p.m., with a Saturday game at 3 p.m. and a Sunday game at 1 p.m.
