BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alcorn State Women's Soccer has been voted to finish eighth in the 2022 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Predicted Order of Finish, released by the league office Friday, Aug. 12, from the conference headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama.
During the fall 2021 campaign, Alcorn State finished ninth in the SWAC with a league record of one win against seven losses and a draw (1-7-1). Overall, Alcorn State finished the 2021 fall campaign with a record of three wins against 14 losses and a draw (3-14-1), respectfully.
Heading into the 2022 season, Grambling State was predicted to win the SWAC regular season and finish atop the conference standings. The Tigers were followed by Prairie View A&M, Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Jackson State to round out the top five schools in the preseason poll.
Under the direction of
Kevin Larry, now in his third season in charge of the Braves Women's Soccer program in Lorman, Alcorn State returns eight starters from last year. Returning to the Purple and Gold attack is forward
Charlie Bal who finished with a team-high matching two goals a season ago alongside teammate and midfielder
D'Ana Prieto (two goals / assist). The Braves also welcome 12 newcomers to this year's roster, including
Samara Nunn – the 2022 Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of West Virginia.
Southern was tabbed to finish in sixth place, with Texas Southern just ahead of Alcorn State in seventh. Arkansas-Pine Bluff was picked to finish ninth, while Mississippi Valley State rounds out the top 10 league preseason poll.
Prairie View A&M led the league in first place votes with a total of six. Alabama A&M tallied three (3) first-place votes, while Alcorn State and Southern claimed two (2) first-place votes each. Alabama State, Jackson State and Grambling State each collected one (1) first-place vote.
The 2022 SWAC Women's Soccer regular season is set to begin Thursday, Aug. 18, with several league teams in action. Alcorn State kicks off its 2022 campaign August 18, with the Braves playing host to Southern Utah at Sports Force Parks on the Mississippi in Vicksburg, Mississippi at 6 p.m.
The 2022 SWAC Women's Soccer Tournament will be held November 3-6 on the campus of Prairie View A&M.
