MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Faith Archibong tallied nine kills and
Demya Tate added eight, as Alcorn State ended its participation in the third annual ISTAP HBCU Challenge on Saturday afternoon, falling to Coppin State in straight sets at Lockhart Gymnasium on the campus of Alabama State.
Coppin State earned the win on scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-11.
The first set stood tied at 7-7, before Coppin State (5-6) went on an 8-4 run behind the scoring services of Andrea Tsvetanova and teammate Kennedy Beatty. The Eagles went up 18-11, following an Alcorn State attack error.
Coppin State collected the set while hitting just .184 in the opening set.
Alcorn (1-8) got solid contributions in the second set from middle blocker
Demya Tate, as she poured in three kills in the set for the Braves. However, Coppin State answered with five kills from Ammaarah Williams in order to claim the set, 25-13.
Alcorn managed its highest hitting percentage of the match in the third set, with the Braves hitting .269 in the final frame. Coppin State would counter with a .636 hitting mark to win the set and match on a 25-11 score line.
The Braves were led in attack by Archibong's nine kills.
Makayla Wardlaw chipped in with four kills and six digs, while teammate Tate registered eight kills, two blocks (assisted) and a service ace.
Ramona Pulu had 21 assists to quarterback the offense.
Mikenzie Young-Mullins sparked the defense with a team-high nine digs.
Williams led the Eagles with 13 kills and 10 digs to complete her double-double performance, as teammate Miajavon Coleman recorded eight kills and 10 digs.
Alcorn continues nonconference play on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when the Purple and Gold travel to Louisiana-Monroe for a match scheduled for a 6 p.m. start in Monroe, Louisiana.
