Match Report | Centenary (La.) 1 – 3 Alcorn

Braves gather first-ever win from The Ladies

SHREVEPORT, La. – Alcorn's number 10 gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half, while additional goals from Mikayla Duncan and Lauren Hill allowed the Braves to register their first-ever win over Centenary (La.), courtesy a 3-1 decision in nonconference women's soccer action at Mayo Field on Wednesday evening.

Yaisa Reyes, a sophomore forward from Houston, Texas, scored her first goal of the season in the first half on a solo effort from inside the box in the 25th minute, allowing Alcorn the 1-0 advantage. This after the Mayde Creek High product had fired a shot wide of the mark just two minutes prior.

Alcorn (2-4-1) continued to challenge Centenary goalkeeper Madison Ersoff in the first 45, with Natacia Ruiz asking the question in the 30th minute. However, the defender's shot was just over the bar, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of the Braves at the break.

In the second half, Centenary (0-7-1) was under pressure from the Braves right from the kick.

It would take the Purple and Gold just under two minutes into the second 45 to add to their 1-0 advantage, this time seeing Mikayla Duncan find the back of the net off the assist from Jaidyn Matheu. In putting the visitors up 2-0, Duncan secured her first goal of the season, while Matheu recorded her first assist of the 2022 campaign.

For Duncan, it was just the first shot on target for the season for the Waterford, Michigan sophomore as well.

The Ladies got themselves back into the game just after the hour mark, as Daisy Acosta accepted the through-ball from Avery Gilbert to score the 62nd-minute goal.

That brought the score to within 2-1 in favor of Alcorn.

The hosts continued to fire shots at goal, but Vivian Lugo answered the questions with a save in her 45 minutes between the sticks off the bench in the second half.

Despite Ruiz being cautioned in the 73rd minute for Alcorn, the game would be put to bed for the Lorman, Mississippi-based Braves in the 90th minute.

Lauren Hill netted her first goal of the campaign in a devastating counter-attack for the Braves, as freshman forward Samara Nunn's pass set up Hill – who had gotten past the shoulder of her defender, allowing her a shot from just inside the box down to the keeper's right and into the back of the net for the 3-1 final score line.

Alcorn had 16 shots to The Ladies 11 in the game. Five of the Braves shots fell on target, while Centenary had three on target. Both teams had a pair of saves each from their keepers.

Lugo collected the win for the Braves in goal, while it was The Ladies' reserve keeper Karlie Delhommer accepting the defeat.

Alcorn returns to the pitch and the friendly confines of Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium on Friday, Sept. 23, as the Braves play host to Chicago State at 6 p.m.
