Ten Braves Teams Post 3.0 GPA or Better in the Fall

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State athletics department continues its legacy of success with the Braves Points of Pride Initiative as Alcorn Athletics graduates 26 student-athletes and posts a term GPA of 3.29 and a 3.23 cumulative GPA during the Fall of 2022.  

Eleven teams have maintained cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or better, while 10 posted 3.0s or better for the term. The women's and men's tennis teams led the pack last semester with 3.74 and 3.64 GPAs, respectively. Softball came in third with a 3.42, followed by women's basketball and soccer, tied for fourth with 3.26.

"The student-athletes here at Alcorn continue to excel in the classroom. Their hard work and dedication towards their academic careers are unmatched," said Jivanna Smith, Assistant Athletic Director for Student-athlete Services. "I am always proud of their efforts. I look forward to another excelling spring semester."

Individually, 177 Braves achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher, including 37 student-athletes who reached 4.0 for the semester. Overall, 174 hold cumulative GPAs of 3.0, while nine have maintained 4.0s.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is considered one of the premier HBCU conferences in the country. Currently, it ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of HBCU alums playing with professional sports teams.

Current championship competition offered by the league includes competition for men in Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Indoor Track and Field, Outdoor Track and Field, and Tennis.

Women's competition is offered in the sports of Basketball, Bowling, Cross Country, Golf, Indoor Track and Field, Outdoor Track and Field, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, and Volleyball.
