Lewis to Be Inducted into A-Club Hall of Fame

     LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University Athletics Department is celebrating one of its staff as he is being named to the A-Club Alcorn State University National Alumni Association Hall of Fame for his contributions to Alcorn athletics. Garry Lewis, Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, will be inducted as a member of the 2023 Class of the A-Club Hall of Fame for his athletic career at the university and contributions as an alumnus.
 
     "It is an honor to be inducted into Alcorn State University's Sports Hall of Fame," said Lewis. "I appreciate the A-Club and the Committee for their hard work and commitment, and for doing what they can to support Alcorn State University Athletic Programs." 
 
     A standout on the Braves football team, Lewis made his mark on the program as a defensive back. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders in 1990 in the seventh round with the 173rd pick. The New Orleans, La. native played professional football with not only the Raiders but the Dallas Cowboys (1992), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1993), Kansas City Chiefs (1993), Ottawa Rough-Riders (1994), and Hamilton Tiger Cats (1995-1996). He has been a varsity assistant and head football coach, NCAA Division IAA football coach, and a National Football League liaison for Collegiate Football Student-Athletes for Alcorn State.
 
     Off the field, Lewis has excelled as an associate professor/curriculum chair and adjunct professor at Alcorn and the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He has also used his expertise to better ASU by helping to implement an undergraduate sport management degree program, raise funds to renovate the outdoor track & field facility, and purchase fitness equipment to supervise and lead research for Health & Wellness and Obesity through the Blue Cross Blue Shield Mississippi Foundation. Lewis has also served as the principle investigator for the "University and College Health &Wellness Model" program on Alcorn's campus to reduce obesity on campus and in the surrounding areas and enhanced the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) department's classrooms with Promethean software Smart Boards.
 
     Lewis expressed his appreciation to the organization for their commitment to lending their support to the Alcorn State athletics department and student-athletes like himself. He also spoke about his excitement for the event.
 
     "I appreciate the alumni, administration, and coaches who made this possible for all of us to have an opportunity to attain a degree and represent this wonderful institution," Lewis exclaimed. "I am looking forward to this weekend."

The banquet will be held on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Vicksburg Convention Center located at 1600 Mulberry Street, Vicksburg, Miss.
