LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University baseball team has accepted an invitation to play in the 2024 Cactus Jack Classic hosted by the Houston Astros Foundation and Houston Astros Youth Academy. The classic is set for February 15-18, 2024 in Houston, Texas.Â
"Alcorn State University's opportunity to compete in the Cactus Jack HBCU Baseball tournament is a fantastic opportunity for the university, its baseball program, and the young men participating in the program," said Head Coach Reggie Williams. "It's also an excellent recruiting mechanism for the future."
Coach Williams and the team will be competing with six other historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) as they highlight the institutions and their baseball programs. The event will give HBCU student-athletes the opportunity to play at a Major League Baseball stadium in Minute Maid Park. The event is endorsed and supported by Houston Astros owner, Jim Crane and Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner, Dr. Charles McClelland.
"This gives great exposure to a regional, if not national, audience. At the same time, it offers the players a glimpse into what it feels like to play in a Major League Baseball stadium," Williams mused. "It is an incentive for the players to prepare to show their talents on a big stage. This is what the players are all shooting for, a chance to play at the next level."
