STARKVILLE, Miss. – Alcorn State University women's basketball traveled to Mississippi State University to kickoff their 2023-24 campaign. The Lady Braves fell to the Lady Bulldogs, 43-77.
Alcorn was led by
Zy'nyia White with 11 points while
Nakia Cheatham and
Akyriale Ford accounted for eight points each. White, Cheatham and
Ashanti Backus tallied two assists each to the keep the Lady Braves offense moving. On the boards, Ford,
Kiarra Henderson, and
Destiny Brown made their presence felt for Alcorn with seven rebounds apiece. White also accounted for a team-high three steals in the contest.
As team, Alcorn went 18-of-67 from the field, 4-of-16 from the arc, and shot 28.6 percent from the stripe.
For Mississippi State, Jerkaila Jordan was the leader with 26 points and 13 rebounds. She was followed by Erynn Barnum with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Jessika Carter recorded 10 points and 13 rebounds. Lauren Park-Lane was the assist leader with seven for the Lady Bullldogs. Carter and Debreasha Powe tallied seven blocks, four and three, respectively.
MSU went 27-of-74 from the field, 4-of-24 from the arc and 19-of-25 from the free throw line.
The Lady Braves will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 14 as they travel to Lincoln, Neb. to face the University of Nebraska. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
