Three Lady Braves Score in the Double Digits in 68-60 Loss at Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Three Alcorn State players amassed double-figures scoring on Saturday afternoon, but the Lady Braves fell 68-60 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Basketball contest at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium.

Bethune-Cookman (10-12, 9-3 SWAC) made it five consecutive wins and five straight wins at Moore Gymnasium.

Alcorn (9-14, 5-7 SWAC) grabbed a 13-8 lead midway through the first quarter when the Braves top scorer, Destiny Brown, drove to the hole for two of her 12 points in the game, off the pass from Cayla Obillo. But the Wildcats quickly turned things around with an 8-0 run to end the quarter, kicked off by a Cameraah Langston jumper in the paint, and finished courtesy a Chanel Wilson driving layup with three seconds left on the clock to put BCU up 16-13.

The Cats connected on 7-of-10 free throws in the second quarter to take a 34-28 lead into the locker at the break.

Brown had four points in the quarter for the Braves, all coming from the foul line.

Meanwhile, Langston chipped in five points for the Maroon and Gold, with teammate Karianna Woods adding four of her own in the quarter.

The third quarter would see a surge from the visitors when Tyginae Wright converted a fast break layup to give the Braves their first lead since the opening quarter, as she took the pass from Obillo and scored with 7:04 left in the third. The Braves would add to the advantage and hold a 42-34 lead moments later as former BCU student-athlete De'Asia Reid scored in the paint, and Zy'Nyia White hit on a jumper in the paint stemming from a Wildcats turnover.

Alcorn would lead 44-38 after another Wright jumper with 4:12 showing on the clock.

The Cats would use Wilson and Kayla White to tie the game at 44-all just over two minutes later. And it would be a pair of White free throws that allowed the hosts to carry a 48-47 lead into the final quarter of play.

BCU would stretch the lead to a 58-51 advantage midway through the frame when Clark hit a free throw, followed by a fast break layup from Wilson. The lead would stretch to double-digits for the first time all afternoon with 1:22 remaining after Clark's jumper from the left elbow of the Wilson assist.

Alcorn was paced on the day by Brown's double-double performance of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Nakia Cheatham led the scoring for the Braves with 14 points and 12 rebounds to complete her double-double outing.

For Bethune-Cookman, Wilson finished with 16 points and three assists. D'Shantae Edwards ended with 13 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. And it was White amassing 13 points and three steals.

The Lady Braves will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 13, when they take on conference-rival Florida A&M. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. CT/ 5:30 p.m. ET inside the AL Lawson Center.
