TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Destiny Brown and Nakia Cheatham scored 18 points each in the Lady Braves' victory over Florida A&M Monday night. Alcorn State defeated FAMU 73-67 in the Al Lawson Center to improve to 10-14 overall and 6-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Brown tallied her seventh double-double of the season, pairing her 18 points with 14 rebounds. The sophomore center from Los Angeles, Calif., went 8-for-12 from the field and 2-for-3 at the free-throw line. Cheatham shot 7-of-11 from the floor, including 1-of-2 from beyond the arc. She also had a perfect showing at the line, landing 3-of-3.
As a team, Alcorn shot 48.4 percent (30-of-62) from the field, 18.2 percent (2-of-11) in three-point range, and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) of its free throws.
The Rattlers were led by Mide Oryomi, who had 20 points and eight rebounds. The team went 23-for-62 (37.1 percent) from the field, including 6-for-22 behind the arc (27.3 percent) and 15-for-23 (65.2 percent) at the line.
It was a close game throughout the contest, with the score tying five times and the lead changing eight times. The Lady Braves were more effective in the paint, outshooting FAMU 42-22, and had a more productive bench 10-4.
Alcorn returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, taking on in-state rival Jackson State University. The match will be streamed live on HBCU Go with a 12:30 p.m. CT tipoff.
