JACKSON, Miss. – Tyginae Wright and Zy'Nyia White scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, but the Alcorn women's basketball team lost to Jackson State 81-49 on Saturday at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.
Alcorn (10-15, 6-8 SWAC) got seven points and ten rebounds from Destiny Brown, but it was not enough to push the Lady Braves past the Lady Tigers, who currently sit at No. 1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings.
Alcorn jumped to an early 9-4 lead after a string of three-pointers from Wright and White. Jackson State would battle back and take the lead 12-11 with 3:13 left in the first quarter. Despite the Braves' best efforts, they could never reclaim the lead to lose the game 81-49.
As a team, Alcorn shot 17-for-66 (25.8 percent) from the field, including 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) in three-point range. From the line, the Lady Braves made nine of 15 to shoot 60 percent.
Jackson State (16-8, 13-1 SWAC) shot 49.1 percent from the floor, with 35.3 percent going in from three-point range. At the line, the Tigers made 71.9 percent of their shots.
Jariyah Covington led the JSU offense. The Starkville, Miss. native scored a season-high 22 points with eight rebounds. Liz Martino contributed 11 points to the effort.
The Lady Braves claimed more offensive rebounds than JSU, 14-12, and more second-chance points, 16-9. The Lady Tigers bench was more productive than Alcorn's, 29-12, and they scored more points in the paint, 20-14.
Alcorn women's basketball will get a week-long break from competition before returning to its home court on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Braves are set to take on Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m.
