LORMAN, Miss. – Destiny Brown scored 27 points, but the Lady Braves basketball team lost to Prairie View A&M 98-88 Saturday afternoon in the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Alcorn State (10-16, 6-9 SWAC) got 18 points and 11 rebounds from Nakia Cheatham for her highest-scoring game of the season and her second double-double.
Prairie View fired off the first shot in the opening seconds of the first period, landing a three-point jumper. Ashanti Backus answered moments later, splitting shots at the free-throw line to trail the Panthers 3-1. The Panthers went on a 5-0 scoring run before Cheatham broke the silence to cut the PVAM lead to 8-3.
Alcorn would never quite catch up to Prairie View's lead, trailing them for the remainder of the contest.
The Lady Braves made 30 of 67 (44.8 percent) from the field, including 5 of 16 (31.3 percent) in the three-point range. Alcorn also went 23 of 35 (65.7 percent) from the free throw line.
Prairie View (14-13, 11-5 SWAC) had three players who scored in the double-digits. Diana Rosenthal had 19 points, Kennedi Heard scored 14, and Kennedy Paul gave 11 points. The Lady Panthers went 31-for-61 (50.8 percent) from the floor, including 11-for-23 (47.8 percent) beyond the arc and 25-for-39 (64.1 percent) at the line.
The Lady Braves return to the court on Monday, Feb. 27, to host Texas Southern in the final home game of the 2023 season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. and will stream live on HBCU Go.
