LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State baseball team dropped game one by a final score of 10-4 against Prairie View A&M in the series opener on Saturday afternoon at William 'Bill' Foster Field.
Four Braves pitchers combined for four strikeouts on the night. Starting the contest, Austin Delgado had a good outing as he went 4.2 innings while allowing three runs on five hits and fanning three along the way. Jaylon Lucky, Garret Palladino, and Ben Luckett connected for two hits each, while Luckett hit for a double.
Alcorn opened the scoring as they plated one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Palladino hit a single to the shortstop. Palladino advanced to second on a single by Jamaal Green, currently at the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a .526 batting average. Diego Lopez-Molina singled to right field to bring Palladino home.
The Panthers responded with three in the top of the fifth frame. Garrison Weiss hit a triple to right field to score Andre Jackson, II, and Zachary Trevino to lead Alcorn 2-1. They extended that lead with an additional run as Michael Burroughs doubled to bring home Weiss.
Alcorn tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Palladino singled down the right-field line to score Lucky and Luckett.
PVAM regained the lead in the third, putting up three runs to bring the score to 6-3. Trevino singled to rightfield to score Marshal Jonas, and Jackson tripled to center field to score Trevino and Jonas.
Lucky cut the Panther's lead to 6-4, hitting a single to left field in the bottom of the seventh as Mason Duke scored the Brave's final run.
Prairie View added four runs in the final frame to seal its victory. Sebastian Coria doubled to the left of center field to bring Burroughs and Weiss home, and an error would score Coria and Alex Martinez.
The two teams will return to William "Rat" McGowan Stadium on Sunday, March 19, for the final two games of the three-game series. The first pitch is set for 11 a.m.
