BATON ROUGE, La. – In the opening contest of a three-game series at Lee-Hines Stadium, the Braves were downed by conference-rival Southern University, 14-4, on Friday evening.
Jaylon Lucky notched three hits, including one double, on four plate appearances. The Atlanta, Ga. native also added one run and one RBI in the effort. Two other Braves connected for a hit as Garrett Palladino went 1-for-4 with one run, and Trey Adams went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Jermel Ford (0-3) was credited with the pitching loss. He pitched for 3.0 innings to allow six hits with seven earned runs. He struck out one batter with two walks. Four other Braves occupied the mound against the Jaguars. Hayden Konkler threw for two frames with one hit, one earned run, two strikeouts, and three walks. Kevin Jackson, Payton Bayles, and Jamil Betancourt also saw action on the mound.
Alcorn struck first in the top of the second inning as a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch scored Lucky after he led off with a single to the shortstop. Trey Adams would collect the Braves' second RBI of the contest. He also singled to the shortstop to bring home Dillon Crowell, who took first after being hit.
The Braves extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third. Jamaal Green scored on a fielder's choice after first making it to base on a walk.
Southern answered in the bottom of the inning, plating six runs to take a 6-3 lead. The Jaguars added a seventh run in the bottom of the fourth before Alcorn responded with a run in the fifth. Lucky scored Palladino on a single up the middle.
Southern continued to score in each frame until the game was called in the bottom of the eighth due to the run rule. The Jaguars defeated the Braves 14-4.
The Braves will return to Lee-Hines Stadium on Saturday, April 1, to face Southern in the second game of the series. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
