Baseball Defeats Southern for the First Time Since 2017

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Alcorn State University baseball team defeated the Southern Jaguars, 15-12, in game two of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Lee-Hines Stadium.

The Braves last defeated the Jaguars on Feb. 19, 2017, when the Braves took a 6-5 win at the MLB Urban Youth Academy Invitational at the Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans, La.

Six Braves had multiple-hit games as Garrett Palladino went 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI. Khalil Smith had a 2-for-5 outing with one run and three RBIs, and Jaylon Lucky, Kalum Banks, Jr., Jordan Holt, and Gavin Caston had two hits each.

On the mound, the Braves pitching staff consisted of Kewan Braziel, Michael Lorenz, Kiki Ford, Jr., Kameron Hopson, and Palladino. Braziel took his first throwing victory of the season, occupying the mound for 6.0 innings with six strikeouts, two walks, two hits, and two runs (one earned).

Alcorn jumped out to a 9-0 lead, scoring one in the first, three in the second, three in the fourth, and two in the second before Southern could score a single run.

The Jaguars plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth and added one in the seventh to cut the Braves lead to 9-3.

Not to be defeated, Alcorn put up five runs in the eighth inning, and Southern answered with two.

In the game's final frame, Alcorn scored one on a single to center field to put the score at 15-5.

The Jaguars still had some fight, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the inning but were shy of the victory, losing 15-12.

The Braves will return on Tuesday, April 4, when they travel to Jackson to take on Mississippi Valley in the Hank Aaron Tribute Game. The contest is set for 6:30 p.m. at Smith Wills Stadium.
