Flashback Friday: Back-to-Back Regular Season Basketball Champions

LORMAN, Miss. – This summer, Alcorn State Athletics will unveil its Flashback Friday feature to usher in the offseason and get us ready for the fall seasons come early September. Flashback Friday is a look back into past performances from Brave student athletes and coaches along with championship spotlights. Each Friday over the summer, we will have a different feature release.

Today we begin our series with the men's basketball back-to-back regular season titles. Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Braves basketball program, Head Coach Landon Bussie has brought a championship pedigree back to the reservation. In just three seasons, Coach Bussie has won the SWAC regular season title in back-to-back seasons along with two NIT appearances and being named Coach of the Year on two occasions.

The Braves finished with a 17-17 (14-4 SWAC) record in 2021-2022 and a 18-14 (15-3 SWAC) record in 2022-2023. During the championship runs, the Braves landed three student-athletes on the All- SWAC team. Justin Thomas was named second team All-SWAC after the 2021-22 campaign after averaging 10.6 points per game. Dominic Brewton (first team) and Jeremiah Kendall (second team) both were named to the All-SWAC team at the end of the 2022-2023 season. Brewton averaged 12.0 points per game and Kendall averaged 11.1 points per game.
