LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State Athletics continue its Flashback Friday feature to usher in the offseason as we head into the fall seasons come mid-August. Flashback Friday is a look back into past performances from Brave student athletes and coaches along with championship spotlights. This week we continue our series with a feature on Olympic gold medalist Mildrette Netter-White. Netter-White made a name for herself at Alcorn State and across the world as a world class sprinter.
Netter-White enrolled at Alcorn in 1967 as a walk-on with the Alcorn State track and field team. Despite her first love being basketball, she fell in love with track and field with the inspiration of her high school coach, Willie McCoy.
In 1968, Netter-White worked hard the entire year and earned herself a spot on the United States women's 4x100m relay team which competed at the 1968 Olympics. She and three other women captured first in the 4x100m relay which made her the first female from Alcorn State to earn a gold medal in the Olympic Games.
Netter-White, a 1972 graduate of Alcorn State finished her career with an impressive resume. She was ranked no. 3 in the world in the 100m dash with a time of 11.2 in 1968 and was a three-time All-SWAC and All-NAIA track performer. She was named AAU Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in 1969 and was a torchbearer in the national torch relay for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. November 16, 2018, the track and field on campus was renamed the Mildrette Netter-White Track & Field.
She is currently a member of the Alcorn State Hall of Honor, SWAC Hall of Fame, Alcorn State Athletic Hall of Fame, the Clarksdale/Coahoma Sports Hall of Fame, the Rosedale-West Bolivar High School Hall of Fame, Bob Hayes Track Hall of Fame, and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
