Braves Outlast Bulldogs, Defeat AAMU, 74-71

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Coach Landon Bussie and the Alcorn State University men's basketball team (2-13, 1-1 SWAC) claimed their second win of the season and the first Southwestern Athletic Conference win of the 2023-24 campaign over Alabama A&M University on Thursday night. The Braves held on and defeated the Bulldogs, 74-71, in the thrilling road game.
 
    Alcorn outpaced Alabama A&M (3-13, 2-1 SWAC) across the board. The Braves scored 19 points off turnovers compared to AAMU's 16. ASU outscore the Bulldogs in the paint, 38-28, in fast break points, 18-2, and the bench, 28-19. Alcorn also collected 38 boards compared to Alabama A&M's 29.
             
    ASU had three players with double-digit point totals for the evening. Jeremiah Kendall led the way with a double-double of 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Byron Joshua contributed 12 points and a team-high six assists. Jeremiah Gambrell rounded out the top three with 10 points.
              
    Collectively, the Braves went 43.5 from the field, 66.7 percent from the free throw line, and 46.2 percent from the arc.

    Dailin Smith was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs with 17 points and five rebounds. He was followed by Lorenzo Downey with 12 points and three rebounds and Omari Peek with 11 points and three rebounds. Cameron Tucker tallied five assists.

    As a team, Alabama A&M went 46.3 percent from the field, 75 percent from the stripe, and 37.5 percent from the arc.

    Alcorn State travels to Alabama State University on Saturday, Jan. 13 in Montgomery, Ala. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
