JACKSON, Miss. – Alcorn State University men's basketball opened Southwestern Athletic Conference play against Jackson State University on Saturday afternoon. The Braves fought valiantly but came up short, 80-88.
ASU outscored the Tigers, 44-42, in the paint. Alcorn's bench also came to shine as they outworked Jackson State and tallied 21 points to their eight.
The Braves finished the night with four players in the double digits for point totals.
Jeremiah Kendall led the way with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kendall also tallied two assists and two steals.
Djahi Binet made his presence known with 15 points and six rebounds while
Jeremiah Gambrell finished with 11 points and three rebounds.
Stephen Byard recorded 10 points while
Byron Joshua ended the night with three assists.
As a team, Alcorn went 41.7 percent from the field and 78.3 percent from the stripe.
Jackson State also had four players with double digit point totals. Coltie Young finished the night with a game-high 26 points and four rebounds. He was followed by  Jordan O'Neal with 19 points and six rebounds and Ken Evans, Jr. with 15 points and eight rebounds. Chase Adams rounded out the four scorers with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Collectively, JSU went 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the line.
Alcorn will take to the court against Alabama A&M University on Thursday, Jan. 11 in Huntsville, Ala. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
