ITTA BENA, Miss. – Alcorn State University women's basketball (5-17, 3-8 SWAC) stormed the R.W. Harrison Complex on Monday night and walked out with a win over Mississippi Valley State University. The Lady Braves defeated the Delta Devilettes, 70-65, to snap a six-game losing streak.
Alcorn broke even in the points from turnovers battle, 12 all.
Destiny Brown showed her dominance in the paint with a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds. She also racked up a season and game-high seven blocks and dished out four assists.
Nakia Cheatham proved to be as formidable as Brown putting up a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 15 boards.
Kiarra Henderson exploded with 15 points while Zy'Nyia White dropped 12 points of her own.
The Lady Braves were 43.1 percent from the field and 68.6 percent from the free throw line.
Mississippi Valley State (2-22, 1-10 SWAC) was led by Leah Turner with 14 points, two rebounds and two assists. She was followed by Sh'Diamond McKnight with 10 points, six assists, and three rebounds. Jaylia Reed also scored 10 points and recorded three assists. Amberly Brown led the Devilettes in rebounds with six and came down with two blocks.
As a team, MVSU went 39.4 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from the line.
ASU will be back in the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Saturday, Feb. 17 as they welcome Bethune-Cookman University. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
