LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University men's basketball (9-17, 8-5 SWAC) continued their hot streak with a win over Florida A&M University in the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Monday night. The Braves struggled in the second half but fought hard for a 79-68.
In the first half of the play, Alcorn shot out to a quick lead and maintained it. The duo of
Jeremiah Kendall and
Jeremiah Gambrell combined for 25 points with Kendall scoring 12 while Gambrell tallied 13. ASU also hit the board hard in the first half to the tune of 18 rebounds compared to FAMU's 11. At the half, Alcorn State led by eight points.
The second half moved at a much faster pace and saw the Braves blow 11 points lead with 17:17 left in the half. However, Alcorn regained their confidence and finished out the half with relentless defense and knocking down key shots.
Alcorn finished the game with four players with double digits. Kendall led the team with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Gambrell finished with 15 points and six rebounds.
Jalen Hawkins tallied 12 points and four rebounds.
Byron Joshua rounded out the top scorers with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
The Braves won the points off turnovers battle, 25-6, and outscored the Rattlers in fastbreak points, 23-8. The team went 40.6 percent from the field and 73.3 percent from the line.
Florida A&M (4-20, 2-11 SWAC) finished with four players in the double-digits. Shannon Grant was the leader with 15 points and seven rebounds. Keith Lamar scored 13 points and five rebounds while Jalen Speer finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Hantz Louis-Jeune finished with 10 points and two rebounds.
The team went 40.7 percent from the field and 100 percent from the free throw line.
Alcorn State will host Jackson State University in the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.
