Braves Pushed to the Brink in Overtime, Get Decisive Win Over Jackson State, 87-73

LORMAN, Miss. – Head Coach Landon Bussie notched his 51st career win as the Alcorn State University men's basketball team defeated Jackson State University in the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Braves were hung tough with tenacious defense in overtime and came away with an 87-73 victory. The win places Alcorn in contention for third place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

    The Braves (10-17, 9-5 SWAC) dominated Jackson State in point off turnovers, 19-10, paint points, 34-24, fast break points, 18-1, and points from the bench, 20-11.

    Byron Joshua shined for Alcorn State as he dropped a cool 21 points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jeremiah Kendall hung 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks on JSU. Jeremiah Gambrell rounded out the top scorers with 12 points of his own as well as one rebound and one steal.

    ASU went 50.8 percent from the field. 41.2 percent from the arc, and 87 percent from the free throw line.

    Jackson State (12-15, 8-6 SWAC) was led by Keionte Cornelius with 19 points and two rebounds. He was followed by Ken Evans with 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Jordan O'Neal scored 17 points, grabbed four rebounds and one assists.

    The Tigers went 49.1 percent from the field and 60 percent from the free throw line.

    The Braves will be on the road on Saturday, March 2 as they travel to face Prairie View A&M University. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
