Alcorn Extends Win Streak to 3, Defeat FAMU, 64-49

LORMAN, Miss. – Head Coach Nate Kilbert and the Alcorn State University women's basketball came into their contest with Florida A&M University with victory on their minds. The Braves clashed with the Rattlers and came away with a much-needed win, 64-49. With the win, ASU extends its win streak to three of the last four contests and find themselves in ninth place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The wins over Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman give Alcorn the tie breaker in a head-to-head matchup.

The Lady Braves came out firing on all cylinders in the first half of the game. Alcorn was able to put up a 16-point lead over the Rattlers. In points off turnovers, ASU outscored Florida A&M, 14-2 and in rebounds, 14-12. They were also able to hold the Rattlers to just six points in the second quarter. Zy'Nyia White hung 10 points and Akryiale Ford snatched down five boards in the first two halves.

To start the third quarter, Florida A&M attempted to mount a comeback, but the Lady Braves wouldn't allow it. In the second half of play, Brown continued her dominance racking up 11 points and 10 rebounds. Alcorn hit the boards hard and came back with 17 rebounds compared to FAMU's eight.

ASU finished the night with four players in the double digits. Brown led the team with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds as well as three blocks. She was followed by Zy'Nyia White with 14 points and five rebounds. Tyginae Wright and Nia McCalphia lit up the three-point arc and hit the Rattlers for 13 points and 12 points, respectively. McCalphia went 4-of-7 from behind the arc while Wright went 3-of-6. Wright, Nakia Cheatham, and Kailyn Watkins accounted for four assists each.

The Lady Braves went 44 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range, and 66.7 percent from the stripe.

Florida A&M was led by Ahriahna Grizzle with 17 points and two assists. Peryonna Sylvester followed her with 10 points.

The Rattlers were 41.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the line.

Alcorn will welcome its in-state rival, Jackson State University, in the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Saturday, Feb. 24. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
