LORMAN, Miss. – Kailyn Watkins exploded in her return to the court against Southern University on Saturday afternoon. The Alcorn State University Lady Braves basketball squared off with the Lady Jags but couldn't overcome a low scoring third quarter and dropped the game, 58-61.
In the first half of the game, the Lady Braves put their foot on the gas and raced past the Lady Jags, 36-21. Alcorn's Watkins made her presence known with 10 points scored in the first two quarters.
Akyriale Ford snapped up a quick five rebounds while
Tyginae Wright and
Nia McCalphia accounted for three assists each.
Alcorn State outscored Southern through the first two quarters in paint and bench points, 12-0 and 13-11, respectively.
The second half was riddled with mistakes and miscues from the Lady Braves. Southern was able to hold Watkins to 11 points. The Lady Jags also turned Alcorn's turnovers into 25 points compared to the Lady Braves five.
Watkins finished the day with 21 points.
Kiarra Henderson and Ford pulled down seven boards each. Wright accounted for four assists.
Alcorn went 51.4 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line.
Southern was led by Taylor Williams with 19 points and four rebounds. She was followed by Genovea Johnson with 11 points, four rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Jaguars went 44 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from the line.
ASU returns to action on Monday, Feb. 5 as they welcome Grambling State University to the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Tip off is set for 5 p.m.
