HOUSTON, Texas – Alcorn State University men's basketball (12-17, 11-5 SWAC) continued its winning streak on Monday night as they traveled to face Texas Southern University in H&PE Arena. The Braves locked in, matched up, and came away with a win over the Tigers, 82-79. The win places Alcorn third in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with only two games remaining.
ASU outpaced Texas Southern in the first half, 40-37, which helped the team in the long run. The teams were evenly matched in the second half as they scored 42 points each. The Braves were able to win the battle in the paint, 38-30, second chance points, 20-13, fast break points, 12-11, and from the bench, 23-12.
Jeremiah Kendall bounced back from his Saturday night performance with 27 points, eight rebounds and three assists. He was followed by
Dekedran Thorn with 11 points and three rebounds.
Byron Joshua,
Jalen Hawkins, and
Jeremiah Gambrell contributed 10 points each. Gambrell accounted for six rebounds while Joshua and Hawkins snagged four boards each.
Alcorn went 44.4 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from free throw stripe.
Texas Southern (13-15, 11-6 SWAC) was led by Jonathan Cisse with 36 points, five rebounds and two assists. Deon Stroud recorded 11 points and two rebounds. Chris Craig contributed six rebounds and three steals while P.J. Henry pulled down seven rebounds.
As a team, the Tigers went 48.4 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from line.
The Braves will take on the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University on Thursday, March 7. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
