BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Head Coach Mariah Prince and Alcorn State University women's volleyball went on an Alabama road trip to face the University of Alabama-Birmingham and Samford University over the weekend. On Friday, the Lady Braves fell to UAB, 0-3, and to the Bulldogs on Saturday, 0-3.
UAB
In Friday's match against the Blazers, Alcorn dropped the match, 0-3, with set scores of 10-25, 12-25, and 9-25.
Ramona Pulu and
Erin Mims led the team in kills with four each. Mims and
Jalayah Hamby accounted for two blocks. Pulu led the team in assists with four while
Harmoni Carswell had three. Carswell racked up 10 digs while Pulu finished with nine
The team ended the match with 12 kills, 11 assists and 30 digs.
UAB was led in kills by Jorda Cook with 11 and Abby Jones with seven. Brooklyn Allison and Meg Jarrett had three aces each. Asli Celikkol had two blocks and Kelsey Smith finished the match with 20 assists. Allison and Mia Reese ended the day with eight digs, respectively.
Collectively, the team finished with 35 kills, 14 aces, 32 assists, and 45 digs.
Samford University
On Saturday, the Lady Braves came up short against the Bulldogs, 0-3, with set scores of 11-25, 9-25, and 7-25. Despite a determined effort, the Lady Braves were unable to overcome the Bulldogs' strong play.
Junior setter
Ramona Pulu led Alcorn State with a solid all-around performance. Pulu recorded 2 kills and contributed significantly on the defensive end with 23 receptions and a dig, showcasing her versatility and leadership on the court.
Erin Mims also put in a notable effort, tallying 17 total attacks and adding 3 digs and a block assist. Meanwhile,
Bailey Upshaw provided a spark with 2 kills on 4 attempts, along with a dig to aid the defensive efforts.
Alcorn State struggled to find offensive rhythm against a staunch Samford defense. The Lady Braves' attack percentage remained low throughout the match, and errors proved costly. The team's best sideout percentage of 37% came in the first set, but it declined in subsequent sets, ending with 29% in the third.
Despite their efforts, the Lady Braves found it difficult to break through Samford's defense, with a combination of attack errors and reception issues preventing them from gaining momentum.
Alcorn State will take the court on Tuesday, Sept. 3 against Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
