BATON ROUGE, La. – Alcorn State women's soccer continued its strong conference play Friday evening, earning a 3-1 win over Southern University at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
The Lady Braves (4-5-3, 3-1-1 SWAC) overcame an early deficit with three unanswered goals to secure the road victory. Southern (3-10-1, 2-4-1) struck first in the 25th minute when Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles scored unassisted to give the Lady Jaguars a 1-0 lead.
Alcorn responded quickly as Veronica Smith netted her first goal of the season in the 34th minute, finishing off a setup from Annick Zouma to even the score at 1-1. Zouma continued to be a factor in the attack, later assisting on Ainara Aldeano's go-ahead goal in the 56th minute.
The Lady Braves put the match away in the 71st minute when Elive Larissa Joso Luma tallied her sixth goal of the year, assisted by Deryn Doamekpor, to extend the lead to 3-1.
Aldeano led the Alcorn offense with three shots and two on target, while Zouma added five shots and two assists. Joso Luma registered three shots, all on goal, and Smith added a goal on her lone attempt.
Goalkeeper Bame Mokime earned the win with three saves over 90 minutes of play.
As a team, Alcorn outshot Southern 15-7, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Lady Braves also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks and maintained 62 percent of the possession throughout the match.
Alcorn State returns to action Sunday when it travels to Jackson, Mississippi, to face Jackson State in another key SWAC matchup.
