VICKSBURG, Miss. – Alcorn State women's soccer battled through 90 minutes of hard-fought play but came up short in a 1-0 loss to Alabama A&M Thursday evening at Key City Park.
The Lady Braves controlled possession for much of the contest, holding 62 percent of the ball and outshooting the Bulldogs 2-1. Despite their attacking presence and seven corner kicks, Alcorn could not find the equalizer.
Alabama A&M scored the match's lone goal in the 15th minute when forward Czaske Deane netted her fourth goal of the season on an unassisted strike. The Lady Braves' defense, led by Viviana Sanchez, Yeirdan Padilla, and Rebecca Kwoba, kept the Bulldogs from adding to the tally, limiting them to just one total shot for the match.
Alcorn's best scoring opportunities came late in each half. Annick Zouma fired a shot high in the 43rd minute, while Mariana Ruiz Montoya's attempt in the 62nd minute was blocked inside the box. Iesha Rollins and Valentina Bernal added pressure in the attacking third, but Alabama A&M goalkeeper Madelyn Cornwell went untested as the Lady Braves' shots failed to land on frame.
Bame Mokime went the full 90 minutes in goal for Alcorn, anchoring a strong defensive performance despite being tagged with the loss.
Both teams were shown multiple yellow cards in a physical second half, including cautions to Alcorn's Elive Larissa Joso Luma and Deryn Doamekpor.
With the result, Alcorn moves to 2-5-3 overall and 1-1-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alabama A&M improves to 5-7-0 and 2-1-0 in the SWAC.
The Lady Braves return to action on Sunday when they host Alabama State, kick-off set for 1:00 p.m.
