BATON ROUGE, La. – Alcorn State volleyball dropped a three-set contest to Southern University Thursday evening, falling 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) inside Seymour Gymnasium.
The Lady Braves battled throughout each frame, keeping the scores tight early before the Jaguars used key service runs and front-row defense to pull away late in each set.
Courtney Carter paced Alcorn's offense with nine kills and nine digs, continuing her consistent play at the net. Cristin Webb added five kills, while Kyla Powell chipped in five kills to help lead the attack. Setter Juliana Henao directed the offense with 21 assists and added four digs and a ace, providing a steady presence in the backcourt.
Defensively, libero Tomoni Giddings anchored the back row with a match-high 20 digs, showcasing her range and court coverage. Jessika Martinez contributed four kills apiece, giving Alcorn several options across the net.
As a team, Alcorn totaled 27 kills, 23 assists, and 38 digs, finishing with a .056 hitting percentage. Southern countered with a .230 hitting percentage, collecting 31 kills and five team blocks to secure the home victory.
The loss drops Alcorn to 2-19 overall and 1-7 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
Alcorn State returns to action Sunday afternoon with a conference matchup on the road at Jackson State. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
