TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alcorn State women's basketball dropped its first road match up of the season, falling 92-39 to the University of Alabama on Monday evening inside Coleman Coliseum.
The Lady Braves (1-2) faced a tough Crimson Tide (3-0) squad that came out shooting efficiently from the field, finishing the night at 55.9 percent overall and 50 percent from beyond the arc. Alabama took a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
Kiarra Henderson led Alcorn with nine points and five rebounds, knocking down five of seven free throws. Lauren Nelson and Maya Claytor each added six points, with Claytor connecting on a pair of three-pointers. Chrishunti Walker contributed four points and four rebounds, while Arene Iyekekpolor chipped in four points with a three-pointer and a pair of boards. Nakia Cheatham finished with two points and one rebound.
As a team, the Lady Braves shot 27 percent from the floor and 31 percent from three-point range, finishing 9-of-17 from the free throw line. Alcorn forced eight steals and held Alabama to just 12 points in the second quarter before the Tide erupted for a 31-point third period to pull away.
Alabama was led by Essence Cody's 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, followed by Ace Austin with 16 points and Ta'Mia Scott with 11. The Crimson Tide also won the rebounding battle 39-26 and outscored Alcorn 44-14 in the paint.
The Lady Braves will return home on Wednesday to host Arkansas Baptist at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. as Alcorn continues its non conference slate.
