LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State women's basketball earned its first victory of the 2025–26 campaign Wednesday evening, defeating Mississippi University for Women 81–56 inside the Davey L. Whitney Health & Physical Education Complex.
After a narrow loss in the opener, the Lady Braves wasted no time establishing control in their home debut, racing out to a 22–8 first-quarter lead and maintaining command throughout. Alcorn shot 44 percent from the floor and forced 29 turnovers, converting them into 32 points. The Lady Braves also dominated the paint, outscoring the Owls 50–24.
Nakia Cheathman led Alcorn with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting, adding nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals in a complete performance. Kiarra Henderson turned in 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals, while Chrishunti Walker added eight points and four boards. Lauren Nelson and Jazlyn Johnson came off the bench to contribute eight points apiece, and Dalayja Hurt-Floyd finished with five points and six assists.
Alcorn controlled the glass with 48 total rebounds, including 18 offensive, and outscored MUW's bench 26–18. The Lady Braves' defensive energy set the tone, holding MUW to 30.8 percent shooting and just 4-of-18 from three-point range.
Conley Langford and Mia Bowen led the Owls with 13 points each, while Fantasia Wilson added eight points and three rebounds.
With the win, Alcorn State moves to 1–1 on the season. The Lady Braves will look to build on the momentum when they travel to face Alabama on Sunday, November 10.
