Braves Drop Sunday Doubleheader at Prairie View A&M

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Alcorn State baseball fell in both games of a Sunday doubleheader against Prairie View A&M at Tankersley Field, dropping the opener 6-3 and the second contest 13-7. The Braves (6-36, 1-22 SWAC) showed offensive flashes across both games, collecting a combined 21 hits, but couldn't overcome the Panthers' timely power hitting and early run production.

Game 1 – Prairie View A&M 6, Alcorn State 3
Prairie View jumped ahead early with two runs in the first and never trailed, adding three more in the sixth to create distance. Alcorn responded late with a pair of runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, but the rally came up short.

Jaylon Burrell and Jermel Ford each recorded multi-hit games, with Ford and Dillon Brown driving in runs to help the Braves close the gap. Samuel Leonard added a sacrifice fly RBI. Kanious Davis pitched a complete game for Alcorn, striking out 10 over eight innings, but took the loss after allowing 10 hits and six earned runs.

Scoring Summary
  • Prairie View scored two in the first, then broke the game open with a three-run sixth, including home runs by Landon Williams and Mac Bowie.
  • Alcorn answered with RBI singles from Brown and Ford in the seventh and eighth, but the deficit proved too large.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • 7 – Hits recorded by Alcorn in the opener.
  • 10 – Strikeouts by Kanious Davis.
  • 3 – RBI shared between Brown, Ford, and Leonard.
  • 1 – Error-free defensive performance by the Braves.
Game 2 – Prairie View A&M 13, Alcorn State 7
In the second game, Alcorn struck first with a run in the top of the first and followed with two more in the second and three in the third, building an early 6-1 lead. However, Prairie View stormed back with a seven-run first inning and later posted four in the sixth and two more in the seventh to secure the win.

Samuel Leonard went 4-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, and an RBI to lead the Braves' offense, while Jaylon Burrell and Kanious Davis each added two hits and combined for four RBIs. The Braves matched Prairie View with 14 hits, but defensive miscues and 13 total walks issued by Alcorn pitchers proved costly.

Scoring Summary
  • Alcorn took a 6-1 lead through three innings, capped by a two-run double from Burrell and a sacrifice fly by Leonard.
  • Prairie View responded with four in the sixth and two more in the seventh, highlighted by a home run from Landon Williams.
  • Alcorn left nine runners stranded and couldn't mount a late comeback despite a double from Leonard in the eighth.

  • 3 – RBIs by Burrell, who also added a double.
