LORMAN, Miss. - Alcorn State University mourns the loss of A-Club President Alvin Moore, who left a mark on athletics and education across Alabama and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Moore, transformed from a defensive lineman at Birmingham's Carver High School to an offensive lineman for Alcorn State from 1968-70, helping the Braves win two SWAC championships and tie for another league title during his collegiate career.
After graduation, he dedicated 42 years to high school coaching and education, serving as head basketball coach, assistant football coach, and athletics director at Phillips High School (1993-2000) and later Carver High until his retirement in 2014, earning induction into the Alabama High School Athletic Association's Hall of Fame in 2014 for his impressive coaching career.
Beyond athletics, Moore was a long-time member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Pratt City since 1984, where he chaired the Deacon Ministry and led the Married Couples Ministry while earning numerous religious leadership honors including Man of the Year for National Baptist Laymen and serving as president of multiple Baptist organizations.
His coaching legacy includes mentoring future NBA player Ennis Whatley during his time at Phillips High, and he remained connected to Alcorn through his service with the A-Club beginning as president in 2017 and on the SWAC Alumni Association Board of Directors as treasurer and business manager, ultimately receiving the Roscoe Nance Alumni Award at the 22nd Southwestern Athletic Conference Legends Awards this year, honoring his lifetime of service to student-athletes and the community.
