Jacksonville, Ala. – Alcorn State women's soccer battled for 90 minutes but came up just short in a 1-0 setback to Jacksonville State Friday evening at the JSU Soccer Complex.
The match remained scoreless through the first half as both defenses held firm. Alcorn registered four shots in the opening period, with Deryn Doamekpor and Mariana Ruiz Montoya leading the early attack. Goalkeeper Bame Mokime directed the back line and kept the Gamecocks off the board through the opening 45 minutes.
The decisive moment came in the 71st minute when Jacksonville State's Louise Featherstone broke through with the lone goal, assisted by Emma Reeder. Despite the setback, the Lady Braves continued to press forward, out shooting JSU 6-5 in the second half and finishing the night with 10 total attempts, five of them on target. Grace Ambrose, Ainara Aldeano, and Elive Larissa Joso Luma each forced key saves from the Gamecocks' goalkeeper Ella Holmberg, who tallied five stops to preserve the clean sheet.
Alcorn showed resilience throughout the match, maintaining 56 percent of possession and earning three corner kicks to Jacksonville State's four. Mokime finished with two saves between the posts.
With the result, the Lady Braves move to 1-3-1 on the season.
Alcorn State now turns its attention to Tarleton State on Thursday, September 11, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
