LORMAN, Miss. — Alcorn State men's basketball came up just short Saturday afternoon, falling 72–71 to Texas Southern in a tightly contested SWAC matchup at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
The game featured 13 lead changes and 14 ties, with neither team able to create lasting separation. Alcorn State battled back multiple times in the second half and briefly took a one-point lead in the final seconds before Texas Southern sealed the outcome at the free-throw line.
Davian Williams paced the Braves with 15 points, connecting on three three-pointers while providing steady scoring throughout the second half. Shane Lancaster added 14 points and four assists, converting key free throws down the stretch to keep Alcorn State within striking distance.
Tycen McDaniels and Omari Hamilton each finished with 11 points. McDaniels added six rebounds and several defensive plays in the paint, while Hamilton provided an interior presence on both ends. Jameel Morris chipped in six points and four assists, and Nick Woodard added five points and two blocks.
Texas Southern was led by Bryce Roberts, who scored a game-high 20 points, including several key baskets late. Alex Anderson added 19 points, including the game-winning free throws as time expired, while Troy Hupstead finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Alcorn State shot 42.3 percent from the field and 21-of-23 at the free-throw line, outscoring Texas Southern 39–38 in the second half and holding a 20–12 edge in bench points. The Tigers' 33 free-throw attempts ultimately proved to be the difference in the one-point decision.
The Braves return to action Monday, Jan. 19, hosting Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in a special MLK Holiday matinee.
