LORMAN, Miss. – Three different Tigers had multiple hits Friday afternoon as Grambling State defeated Alcorn 11-1 in a non-conference baseball matchup as part of the HBCU Power Series presented by Major League Baseball (MLB) at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi. The game was the season opener for both clubs.
Â
Grambling (1-0) scored runs in each of the first five innings to open up a substantial lead early-on.
Â
Tigers catcher Chris Marcellus opened the scoring in the bottom-half of the first with a two-run home run to left field off Alcorn starter
Devin Kriley to put the Tigers up, 2-0.
Â
The GSU lead would swell to 10-0 in the fifth when right fielder Trey Bridges reached on a fielder's choice allowing Ryan Davis to score from third.
Â
Alcorn (0-1) got on the board in the top of the eighth when a
Jamir Holloway single to shallow center was deep enough to score catcher
Nico Garcia for the first Braves run of the 2026 campaign.
Â
The run-rule would come into effect in the bottom of the eighth as Bridges scored on a failed pickoff from Alcorn relief pitcher
Nicholas Johnson, making the final 11-1 score line.
Â
The win was collected by Grambling starter Keevyn Goss (1-0) as he worked four hitless frames, walking four and striking out three in the process. Meanwhile, the loss was tagged to Alcorn's Kriley as the rookie tossed two innings, surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits, one walk and collecting three strikeouts.
Â
Marcellus finished 2-for-5 at the plate for Grambling with two RBIs.
Â
Alcorn was led offensively by Holloway with a hit, as well as
Rayfield Adams III picking up his first hit of the season from the leadoff spot in the lineup.
Â
The Braves take on Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Feb. 14, in their second of three games scheduled on the weekend as part of the HBCU Power Series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
