Women turn in special showing at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – Alcorn Women's Track & Field turned in several personal-best performances over the weekend, including a pair of school records, as the Braves competed in both the men's and women's portion of the Georgia Tech Invitational at George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. The two-day event took place April 17-18.

"I wanted the team to get used to big events and a venue that was just amazing," stated Alcorn Track & Field Head Coach Alonzo Banks. "There were so many great competitors at this event, and we did very well on the women's and men's side against a really good field. I just can't say enough about the crowd and the venue."

In the women's events, the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams set school records for the Purple and Gold.

The 4x100m squad of Brianna Wilson, Sariah Magee, Taliya Spurlock and Izayla Harris went 45.21 to finish second overall. That was followed by the 4x400m team of Sanaa Parker, Wilson, Magee and Harris that finished third in a time of 3:41.87 on the day.

Kaylin White posted a personal best distance of 5.90m in the long jump to take third overall for the event.

"I am so happy for the ladies, as they are now finally seeing their hard work pay off," stated Banks. "It's one thing to see them practice and train each day. But it's so rewarding to see it pay off, so to speak, as they set new records personally and for the school."

Magee was 10th in the 200m, as she registered a time of 24.20, setting a new personal best in the race as well. Magee was 11th in the 100m with a time of 11.81 seconds.

Sanaa Parker stamped a new personal-best finishing time in the 400m hurdles as she crossed in 1:00.50.

Over in the men's events, Jadan Miller qualified for an upcoming meet hosted by LSU with his performance in the discus throw. He launched a distance of 50.38m, allowing him to take fourth place in the event. He also took 12th in the shot put with a mark of 15.40m, respectfully.

Desmyn McCall edged into the top eight of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the 400m hurdles, using a time of 53.78 to finish. That was a new personal best mark for McCall as well. He would be followed by Ethan Campbell (54.20) in the event, with Campbell also setting a new personal best in the race.

McCall went on to establish a new personal-best time of 14.58 to claim 12th in the 100m hurdles.

"It seems as if we're seeing new personal-best times every meet now," continued Banks. "That just shows how locked in the student-athletes are ahead of each meet, and how they're taking training every single day on campus."

The 4x100m relay squad for the Braves finished fourth with a mark of 40.72, using the team of Beethoven Phanord, Trellas Forrest, Joe Coleman and Derrick Williams.

Alcorn next travels to the LSU Alumni Gold meet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, taking place April 25.
