Alcorn shines at SWAC Outdoor Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. – Derrick Williams and Jadan Miller each took home gold in their respective events Tuesday evening, as Alcorn Men's and Women's Track & Field finished up the final day of the 2026 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Outdoor Championships housed at A.W. Mumford Stadium on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

On the men's side of things, Jadan Miller, a sophomore from Gulfport, Mississippi, began the day with a first place showing in the discus throw. His toss of 51.05m (167-06) allowed him his first gold medal in a conference championship after finishing seventh in last year's outdoor championship meet. Miller was also fourth in the shot put for the championships with a distance of 15.43m (50-07.50).

The evening was capped with Derrick Williams, the reigning 200m SWAC Indoor champion, grabbing first place in each of the 100- and 200m events for the Braves.

The sophomore from West Palm Beach, Florida, was third in the preliminaries of the 100m with a time of 10.43, only to return and claim the gold in the finals with a new personal-best time of 10.17 seconds. That also puts him as the fourth-fastest time amongst Historically Black College and University (HBCU) track student-athletes this season. In the 200m, Williams ran a season-best time of 20.49 for the gold of that event as well.

"This is an amazing feeling," said Williams afterwards. "I just, I don't… I am speechless. This is what you work every day for. And now, you have the title in your hands, and that is so special."

Trellas Forrest, took second in the 400m as he blazed a season-low time of 46.02 seconds. That puts the native of Winona, Mississippi, and recent spring graduate, third-fastest amongst HBCU talent on the campaign.

The team of Jaden Gardner, Derrick Williams, Preston Summage and the aforementioned Forrest also claimed a podium finish with a third-place showing in the 4x400 relay to end the night. Sitting in fifth heading into the anchor leg, Forrest was able to catch the competition on the final turn and straightaway, as the Braves finished with a time of 3:08.12 overall.

For the Alcorn group, they beat their own previous school record in the third place showing.

"I am so proud of how they didn't quit," expressed Alonzo Banks, Alcorn Track & Field Head Coach. "They were resilient, and fought through fatigue and pain, and that showed everything about who we are as a program – and what each of those young men has inside of them as a competitor."

The men also took third in the 4x100 relay with a finishing mark of 40.30 – also a season-best running for the Purple and Gold.

Jackson State claimed the 2026 SWAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship with 142 total points. Texas Southern finished second with 110 points while Bethune-Cookman placed third with 104.5 points. Alcorn finished sixth with 68 points, respectfully.

For the women's events, the 4x100 relay squad consisting of Brianna Wilson, Sariah Magee, Taliya Spurlock and Rikki Gray stepped onto the podium with a school record time of 44.99 in the finals. That allowed them to finish second behind Florida A&M, and have the fourth-fastest time in all of HBCU talent for the campaign.

"They made me smile," commented Banks. "They just made me smile. We knew beating [FAMU] was going to be a tall task. But wow, they went out and gave FAMU everything they could handle. I am still smiling for those young ladies."

Izayla Harris, a freshman from Doyline, Louisiana, had one of the best finishes as an individual for the Purple and Gold, as she scored a fifth place showing in the 200m with a time of 23.85 – now allowing her all three of the fastest times for the outdoor season on the Alcorn roster in the event.

It was Silvia Jepkorir taking sixth in the 10,000m with a time of 42:32.30. And then it would be Taylar Brown scoring a fifth-place mark in the long jump with her leap of 5.95m (19-06.25) – a season-high result for the native of Eldoret, Kenya.

Florida A&M captured the 2026 SWAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship title with 145.50 total points, edging Alabama State University, which finished second with 132 points. Southern University placed third with 95.50 points while Alabama A&M University finished fourth with 93 points. The Braves placed 11th with 26 points, respectively.
