CROSS ROADS, Texas – Shirley A. Gibbs-Walker, who spent three decades building the Alcorn women's basketball program into one of the most successful in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), has been named the recipient of the Female Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the recent 2026 HBCU Sports Awards.
 
The honor was announced as part of the third annual awards presentation, which recognized standout administrators, athletes and coaches from across Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in 46 categories.
 
"Coach Gibbs-Walker built something at Alcorn State that will outlast all of us," expressed E. D'Wayne Robinson, Alcorn Athletics Director. "Thirty years of coaching, nearly 500 wins, and a standard of discipline that shaped generations of student-athletes. This award is richly deserved, and we couldn't be prouder to call her one of our own."
 
For Gibbs-Walker, a Bude, Mississippi, native and Alcorn State graduate, the recognition adds to a coaching legacy that spanned parts of three decades on the Lady Braves' sideline. She took over the program in 1978, and did not step away until the conclusion of the 2007-08 season, compiling 493 career victories – still the most of any women's basketball coach in SWAC history.
 
Under her direction, Alcorn won 12 SWAC regular-season championships and six SWAC Tournament titles, also both conference records. The Lady Braves advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times during her tenure – 1999-2000, 2000-01 and 2004-05.
 
Gibbs-Walker's impact on the program has been formally recognized before.
 
She was voted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2010.
 
In 2014, the Mississippi Legislature passed a bill renaming the playing surface at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex the "Shirley A. Gibbs-Walker Court," and the following year she received the SWAC Alumni Association's own Lifetime Achievement Award. She has also served on NCAA committees, including the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee.
 
Colleagues around the conference have long credited Gibbs-Walker with laying the foundation for women's basketball across the SWAC, pointing to her emphasis on discipline and consistency as the throughline of a program that competed at a high level for the better part of 30 years.
 
The HBCU Sports Awards, now in its third year, are produced by HBCU Sports and hosted by Founding Publisher and Editor Kenn Rashad, alongside Jarrett Hoffman and Chris Stevens. The program annually spotlights achievements across Division I, Division II and NAIA HBCU athletics.
