The Alcorn State softball team kicks off the 2015 season this weekend at the Tangi Tourism Classic in Hammond, La. The Lady Braves will play a total of five games this weekend beginning with today's 3:30 p.m. matchup against Texas-Arlington followed by a 5:30 p.m. game against host Southeastern Louisiana.
First year head coach
Josef Rankin will make his debut as the Lady Braves skipper and believes that his team is ready for this weekends season opener.
The MatchupThe Lady Braves and Texas-Arlington face each other for the first time in both of the schools history. Last season the Lady Braves posted a 8-39 record and squeezed into the SWAC Tournament with a late win over Alabama A&M. Texas-Arlington finished the 2014 season with a 21-33 record and lost in the second round of the Sun Belt Tournament to Western Kentucky.

Alexandria Harris returns this season after earning All-SWAC honors in 2014. She led the Lady Braves in homeruns (10), doubles (10), hits (45) and posted a career-high .352 batting average. Sophomore All-SWAC pitcher
Jazmin Castillo pitched in 31 games last season and recorded an ERA of 8.61.
Other returnees include speedy second baseman,
Adriana Gutierrez (led the Lady Braves in stolen bases) and senior outfielder
Rayven Riggs (batted .267 in 2014).
