GULFPORT, Miss. – Alcorn Softball's
Yahnya Acevedo was named to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Second Team for softball on Monday, May 4, as the league office announced its postseason awards and honorees for the 2026 campaign prior to the beginning of the SWAC Tournament in Gulfport, Mississippi.
Â
Yahnya Acevedo, a graduating junior (on the field of play) from Tatum, Texas, was a force both offensively and defensively for the Braves throughout the 2026 season.
Â
The Tatum High alum led the Purple and Gold in several offensive categories including batting average (.385), hits (55), doubles (9), RBIs (27), and tied for the team lead in home runs (3) – all of which were of the inside-the-park variety, respectively.
Â
In the SWAC, Acevedo was one of the five toughest players to strike out for opposing pitchers, recording just six (6) strikeouts in 132 at-bats for Head Coach
Brianna Billie. Playing primarily in center- and left field, Acevedo went on to steal 21 bases in 23 attempts across the campaign.
Â
Defensively, she scored 70 putouts with five assists in 77 total opportunities.
Â
Her other accolades included a team-leading 19 multi-hit contests; eight multi-RBI games; and reaching base a team-high 13 games consecutively at one point. She finished the year reaching safely in her last five appearances for the Braves.
Â
Other SWAC awards were distributed to Florida A&M's Amari Brown (Player of the Year), Alabama A&M's Kali Austerman (Hitter of the Year), Aaliyah Zabala of Southern University (Pitcher of the Year), Southern University's Laila Clark (Newcomer of the Year) and Morgan Smith of Prairie View A&M (Freshman of the Year). Southern's Brittney Williams collected Coach of the Year honors.
Â
The SWAC Tournament will be played in a double-elimination format with action set to begin at 10:30 a.m. CDT on Tuesday, May 5, with games scheduled to run through May 8. If necessary, the championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at the Gulfport Sportsplex in Gulfport, Miss. All tournament games will be available live on SWAC TV.
